Once dubbed as the Marble Palace, the structure is modeled after Bramande and Farnese palaces. It housed several government units during the Spanish time and the most notable is the Cabildo (the municipal council of Manila). In 1907, the Philippine Assembly, the precursor of the Philippine Legislature, started to convened here with Sergio Osmeña as the first Speaker. As the Legislature moved to the Legislative Building outside the walls, the Supreme Court took the place.
The Battle of Manila reduced the once majestic marble palace into ruins. But 65 years after, the reconstruction started to house the Bureau of Treausy and some more museums pertaining to the building‟s former occupants. Construction is set to be finished later this year

The reconstruction and restoration of the Ayuntamiento Building for the Bureau of Treasury is the biggest project to be done inside Intramuros. Upon the completion, the building will complete the Plaza Complex of the Walled City.
The restoration of The Ayuntamiento will in part realize the thrust of Republic Act No. 4840 enacted into law on June 18, 1966, which mandates the restoration of the original Ayuntamiento Building (appropriating at that time, the sum of P1,000,000.00).
