The Stereotypical Katipunero
Since Historians are still arguing when and where the first sounds of the Revolution are heard (Aug 24 vs Aug 26, Pugadlawin vs Balintawak), to commemorate the event, the government designated the National Heroes Day in the last Sunday of August.
Do you know why this is the stereotypical Katipunero suit? Nick Joaquin offers us a good insight.
Checkpoints are being established in and out of the Manila Area when Katipunan was discovered during the 19th of August. Bonifacio directed his followers to gather in Caloocan in the 24th of August, since there are checkpoints, the Katipuneros told the guards that they are going to the feast of San Bartolome de Malabon celebrated during August 24.
San Bartolome de Malabon is an image of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, wearing red and white and brandishing a bolo, and pilgrims to the feast wear the same colors along with a bolo.
