In contrast to today’s congested Cavite, Cavite back then is almost a depopulated province in the bounds of Manila. You could see Manila’s walls from Cavite back then. You could also hear festivities from Manila back then. If the other cities of Metro Manila are now the cities are now the companions of Manila now, back then Cavite supplied that role.
January 20, 1872, a planned uprising in Fort San Felipe is to start in the sound of cannons from Manila. The San Sebastian is also celebrated that date. The fireworks from San Sebastian was mistaken as the signal to start the revolution. They rose up in rebellion but they failed to take over the Fort. The uprising resulted in mass deportations and executions, the most prominent execution of the Gomburza priests. But the executions will eventually open the eyes of the Indios and Filipinos to Spanish Abuses, and will culminate in the Philippine Revolution of 1896.
