Impeachment. More fun in the Philippines

techieyuckyboy:

I watched day 1 and day 2 of the impeachment trial proceedings, and I find the trial really entertaining, more entertaining than local telenovelas at least (not that I watch those). You have to hand it to Senator Enrile a.k.a. Manong Johnny “Gusto Ko Happy Ka” to make the audience happy in the otherwise serious political drama. Special credit also goes to the prosecution team, which was a joke, for making it funny.

Here I compiled some funny points in day 2 of the trial. Texts in square brackets are my own comments.

* * * * *

Voting whether to allow prosecution to subpoena the Corona family.

Senate secretary: All those in favor of the ruling of the chair, say “Ayes”[?]. Not in favor… (interrupted)
Senators: Aye
Senate secretary: Those not in favor of the ruling of the chair, say “Nays”[?].
Senators: Nay
Enrile: [Ano ba talaga?]
Senate secretary: [Raise hands nalang!]

* * * * *

After Enrile explained why the impeachment trial is closer to a criminal case than a civil case.

Tupas: Your honors. May we just ask what’s the source of the material just read by [you]
Enrile (poker face): This is the product of my own mind.

* * * * *

House prosecutor Barzaga trying to present computer-generated documents as evidence.

* * * * *

Barzaga backing down on using the computer-generated documents.

Barzaga: Well anyway, your honor, the court has already issued subpoenas to the Register of Deeds, to the Land Registration Authority…
Enrile: Precisely. Why can you not wait for the Register of Deeds?
Barzaga: Yes your honor. That’s why I am manifesting that we are willing to postpone the hearing for today and…
Enrile: Yun pala ang gusto mo postponement e!

* * * * *

After Enrile warning Barzaga on the non-admissibility of unauthenticated documents.

Barzaga: Yes your honor. Thank you very much for that ruling.
Enrile: Not ruling but a warning. (laughter from audience)
Barzaga: Yes your honor… the ruling that we have the obligation… we have the obligation to properly identify under the rules of evidence at the proper time.
Enrile: Pffft. [Palusot ka pa!] Do you want to proceed or you want to postpone?
Barzaga: We’ll just postpone your honor.

* * * * *

Enrile suspending the trial for the prosecution to rearrange and reschedule their sequence of presentation.

Enrile: The trial is suspended, for 1 minute, uh 2.. 1 long minute!

* * * * *

This is just day 2 of the trial. More to come! I hope Senator Miriam Santiago will be back soon. It will definitely add more spice to the trial!
