I work with an American consultant who’s been coming to the country since 2005. He is of the opinion that Manila or NCR as a city has no culture whatsoever. And by that, he means museums, art galleries, and the like. The problem: apples to oranges.

I think Americans are ignorant when they destroyed the “Cultured” Manila back in 1945 or they still think the Japs did that alone.

Leading to the museums, art galleries and the like. Now, we know what is unseen in the 21st Century Manila Traffic. We have museums but no one visits them. Blame it on the mall culture embedded by Henry Sy, Sr., I am patiently waiting for a congressman to file a bill requiring shopping malls to operate only at 4-5days a week basis so people could have a chance visiting museums and parks. Paging Congressman Castelo!

  1. mecworld said: I was thinking more of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. When people are hungry, the farthest thing from their minds is the higher pursuit of art and culture. To get Juan Dela Cruz to go to museums, etc. requires more than just awareness.

  7. techieyuckyboy said: Blame it on the people. Malls are what the people want, and Henry Sy et. al. just exploited it. Blame it on the government, because they do not invest in the museums, etc. to attract the people. Like the blogger said, no reinvestment.

  9. butwhatever said: It’s sad that most people think that museums are boring (and are for rich and cultured people only). They may not offer as much “fun” as malls but I think seeing relics or something about our culture or whatever brings a different kind of feeling.
